1. Why is it important to Forgive?

  1. God commands us! He forgave us! (Col. 3:12-13)
  2. You don’t – God Don’t (Matt. 6:14-15)
  3. You will be delivered to tormentors (Matt 18:34-35)
  4. Satan will get an advantage (II Cor. 2:5-11)
  5. You will retain the part you don’t like (John 20:23)

2. How do we forgive?

1. As God has (Ephesians 4:32)

“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

2. Go to person who wronged you (Matt 18:15-18); Matt 16:19 (keys to Kingdom)

1 – Private 2 – Witnesses 3 – Church

c) More than once (Matt 18:21) – 70×7

 d) Pray for those who wronged you (Matt 5:44)

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”

3. Biblical Examples of Forgiveness

1. Esau Forgave Jacob  Gen 33:4

“But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.”

Jacob stole Esau’s blessing

b) Joseph forgave his brothers

c) Jesus forgave his enemies   Luke 23:34

“Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots.”

4. What happens when we forgive?

  1. You will be blessed (Psalms 32:1-5)
  2. Enemies will be at peace with you  (Proverbs 16:7)
  3. God will greatly reward you (Luke 6:35)
